Network Jitter

Network jitter in the Internet Protocol Suite is more accurately described as packet delay variation.  It is the difference in network latency between two periods of time close together.  When measuring jitter in a computer network, a high jitter value represents an unpredictable network connection.  This is very adverse in real-time communications like Internet video streaming (e.g. Netflix), Internet video conferencing (e.g. Skype), and Internet video gaming.  Users experience a pause, buffering, or stuttering when jitter is high.
